Could Lidl be opening a new supermarket in Suffolk?

There were rumours Lidl is looking into taking over former Wilko stores in Suffolk, including in Mildenhall and Bury St Edmunds. 

The German retailer has quashed these rumours – but said it is planning on opening more supermarkets in Suffolk.

A spokeswoman for the supermarket said: “These rumours aren’t accurate. We do, however, have Mildenhall listed in our Site Requirements brochure.

“The locations listed within the brochure simply indicate areas of interest, so while we’re keen to bring a new store to the area, we don’t currently have any firm plans.”

The national site requirements for a Lidl store include “prominent locations with easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow” in town centres or on the edge of retail parks.

There are thirteen locations in Suffolk that are being considered for a new Lidl store. 

The include Bury St Edmunds, Hadleigh, Halesworth, Ipswich, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Saxmundham and Sudbury. 

Lidl is also looking to relocate its stores in Felixstowe and Stowmarket.
